TOP NEW SONGS: TERROR JR - HEAVEN WAS NOT MADE FOR ME

7/18/18

A lot has been said in song about heaven over the years. It’s a place on earth, for easy girls, a halfpipe, a truck, a traffic jam on the 405, etc.

But now electro pop duo Terror Jr have the audacity to suggest that “Heaven Wasn't Made For Me". In their defense, if people had for a time thought I was Kylie Jenner, I’d have lost my faith in God too.

Jokes aside, “Heaven Wasn't Made For Me" touches on a number of important socio-political issues, as is often the case with these two. Don’t be fooled by the shiny PC Pop veneer. This track isn’t so much a hit piece on religion per se, as it is a condemnation of the hyper-judgemental, reactionary and toxic forms religious institutes and people can sometimes adapt.

The basic premises of the lyrics is that if getting into heaven requires one to reject their true nature, feelings, desires, as well as becoming hateful and spiteful to those who don’t subscribe to their ideology, then what’s the point? Or put another way, why would a loving God create people only to stuff them full of desires that if acted upon will doom them to a fiery prison for all eternity?

Mark Twain said you go to heaven for the temperate, you go to hell for the company. This song feels very much in a similar vein. And honestly, who thinks spending the afterlife around the type of people you meet at church sounds like a good idea? “It’s a hell of a heaven we must go to when we die,” if you will.

However, if you zoom out to 500 feet though you move past the deeper philosophical, moral, and political questions herein and all you are left with is a terrific pop song.

And regardless of your thoughts on religion, or where you fall on the political spectrum, we should all be able to come together for fantastic music like this.

Terror Jr is comprised of Lisa Vitale and David "Campa" Benjamin Singer-Vine (Felix Snow was previously involved but left the group in 2017), both members of the now-defunct project The Cataracs. They made a name for themselves with their excellent Bop Trilogy EPs. A proper follow up should be in order, hopefully this song is the opening act for such a project.

The duo will be playing a few dates in early August, including Lollapalooza. They also just released a music video for "Heaven Wasn't Made For Me", directed by Millicent Hailes. Check it out below.
