BEST OF INDIE POP - WEEK 45

11/7/18

The polls in America for voting for your next political representative are closed now, but there is still one very important poll open that demands your vote. The answer to everyone’s burning question still needs to be decided … McDonald’s vs Burger King, which one is better? Are we really going to let Kanye decide America’s favorite fine dining restaurant? If you missed or lacked reasons to vote for reds or blues, now is your time to get out and vote. While you guys make your decision, We Are: The Guard will be here enjoying the heck out of Whopper and McD’s fries while presenting the top ten songs in indie pop, featuring Troye Sivan, Ariana Grande, Alec Benjamin, and more.

TROYE SIVAN - SOMEBODY TO LOVE

B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L. Pop singer Troye Sivan has taken Queen’s classic “ Somebody To Love” and has rendered a truly beautiful composition. Without losing the original essence, Sivan strips the single down a notch by focusing in on the lyrics resulting in something spellbinding. All proceeds of this single will go towards the Mercury Phoenix Trust, which supports the global fight against HIV/AIDS.

COTIS - PHONE LIGHT UP

Newcommer Cotis will be making all sort of ears perk up. His debut single instantly puts him on the map of being the next bedroom pop-rap crooner. His single “Phone Light Up” is an exciting taste of the greatness that is to come. Think Drake minus the jar full of tears.

ALEC BENJAMIN - 1994

Alec Benjamin returns with a look back at his life. Personally, anyone born in the 80s/90s can relate to the nostalgia found in “1994”’s lyrics, but for Benjamin, this song is a song of realization. Much has changed in life and as a country. Can’t we go back to waking up to Rugrats and eating Honey Combs with fearing salmonella? Oh, those were the days. Take us back! “1994” forms part of Alec Benjamin’s upcoming mixtape Narrated for You, out Nov. 16.

ARIANA GRANDE - THANK U, NEXT

In honor of Ariana’s new single “Thank U, Next” let’s play a new game. It’s kind of like playing Kiss Mary Kills except for this Love Patience Pain, and your options are Sean, Mac Miller, and Pete. Ok, jot down your answers and let us know.

ASTRID S - EMOTIONS

Pop songstress Astrid S has released the video for her favorite single “Emotions.” The visuals bring to life the feelings expressed within the lyrics. Viewers can watch the singer struggle with her sentiments as she fights to find her inner peace.

SG LEWIS - AGAIN FEAT. TOTALLY ENORMOUS EXTINCT DINOSAURS

Freaking SG Lewis, he’s done it again by releasing another mouth-watering gem. “Again” forms part of the shift that SG Lewis has been transitioning into. Taking a step into deep house, Lewis together with T.E.E.D. create a pocket in time for listeners to be able to escape to and reset their mind before going back to the grind.

FOSTER THE PEOPLE - WORST NITES

Foster The People are happy sad music. They make me dance while I ponder about my dull depressing life. They make me smile as I wait for my Uber in the rain knowing I’m half an hour late to work. They make me LOL as I spend my paycheck faster than I earned it. Like them, the west coast robs me of sleep, yes those are the best nights.

BETH DUCK - OUT TO L.A.

Electro pop artist who’s name you may want to jot down after listening to her track “Out To L.A.” is making sure heads turn at the drop of the needle. Beth Duck takes us down a familiar journey, one where we find ourselves obssesed with things from the past. No matter how far west we go, we’re stuck with the thought of that someone who the only thing they’re good for is to eat us alive. Keep an ear out for Duck, we’re sure she’ll be back with more ear capturing music.

CARLY RAE JEPSEN - PARTY FOR ONE

One of the only good things that we are thankful of Justin Beiber for doing was bringing Carly Rae Jepsen to our lives. Jepsen has reformed herself from her former “Call Me Maybe” phase into an artist who instantly pulls you in with her energy and positive vibes. Take a listen for yourself and don’t be shy … let loose, let your hair down and celebrate yourself!

LIV DAWSON - GOOD INTENTIONS

We close off the list with British crooner Liv Dawson and her “Good Intentions.” Her single is ready for a night in with a glass of wine and mirror because her beat will make you want to practice those good inteded moves of yours before you show them off to your S.O. But be sure to leave a window open because her sensual pop single will steam up the room. Expect Dawson’s EP Bedroom to arrive Nov 16th.

As always, thanks for stopping by. Let us know if we missed anything good by dropping a comment on Twitter, Insta, or Facebook. We’ll be back with more pop songs next week.

Beca Arredondo is easily unamused with all things not related to her interests. On her good days you can catch her avoiding the California sun and glued to her Mac plotting the next big thing. If you happen to run into her on the street and notice her wearing headphones do NOT disturb her. She is not responsible for any possible damage. Aside from the above she's very sweet and perky and responds well to good music and food.
